BE YOURSELf – Campaign Video

Well the time has finally come and after countless nights and frustrating fights with After Effects the Be Yourself Campaign Video is done. It is a fun and playful campaign to highlight a completely positive atmosphere to makeup use.


It’s designed to help each individual feel like themselves, however that may be. Promoting that the best trend or look you can go for is when you’re most comfortable in your own skin. Use a little. Use a lot. However you want to be seen.. is the you that you should present.  What does makeup mean to you and what brings you the confidence to be yourself?

The the girls in the campaign make your own hashtag of how makeup makes you feel, to go along side #BeYourself.




After working through this project I would love to continue to spread the positive thoughts on makeup use, through this campaign. Be Yourself could be a wonder outlet for anyone to express themselves however they would love. This is such a current situation and I am excited to continue to learn more on something I find as a creative outlet.

Be Yourself – Large Campaign Poster

BeYourself_FullPoster.jpgThis poster encompasses a large portion of the Be Yourself campaign. The ads and graphics are made to be adaptable. From posters, to street ads, Instagram posts, or the main video itself. They can be adjusted and reworked for the specific element. The call to action is simple, it’s to encourage the viewer to simply visit, use or check out the hashtags. Then they can also share their own hashtag of how makeup makes them feel.


A New Look!

The Be Yourself campaign has grown since the last presentation, to where creating an online platform is a distinct possibility. It is on the verge of becoming something much larger, a social media campaign to spread the positive attributes about the use of makeup. If managed correctly, it could do a lot of good around the world.

The posters and over feel of the campaign is much more successful with the use of graphics to go work with the campaign photography. The illustrations show the style of the campaign in a light hearted way and added an element of interest to gain more visual appeal.


The Be Yourself campaign video will then go on to tell stories, of each girl in the video, with the use of stop motion graphics. Every individual chose their own hashtag to go with the slogan hashtag of #BeYourself. It was important to have involvement from people who are both comfortable with and without makeup, and someone who wears makeup for special occasions, or for work.

This was an important process, which clearly showed the wide range of emotions people expressed when asked about using makeup. Many different feelings and attitudes prevail on this sensitive topic.

Happiness, Confidence, and an individual’s overall sense of self worth, are all enhanced with the power of Makeup.


Critique Progress

After having critique on the current state of my video, I re-thought where I was at for a new approach. After getting suggestions to have more interactive elements, I thought of a music video that had interesting graphics for a stop motion type of feel. Where Are U Now, produced by Skrillex and Diplo, features video stills printed out and then drawn on top of.

My general style is more of a hand drawn type of touch and I took inspiration from that to move forward with new illustrative elements. Each of the girls in the campaign, would have different illustrations to match with their clip and create more of a visual element to bring the viewer through the video.  These graphical elements can then be carried out through the various posters, online campaign sharing, and branding.


Video Research

For the upcoming work on making a campaign video I wanted to do a little digging and find some interesting examples online. I find stop motion very interesting because it gives a range of motion to the otherwise still imagery, while at the same time giving a more natural atmosphere. A lot of people find it hard to be themselves while being tapes or photographed. I chose to do a form of stop motion so that while I took the photos of the girls, there would be candid moments. Moments when they weren’t 100% sure I was taking a photo, or they weren’t ready, its the photos in between the main photos that are important. Catching these moments are what give the character and reliability to a campaign.

Moving forward it will be key to make sure I take lots of photos for the video and these are some of my favourite videos I found while searching around.



The Power of Makeup

Patrick Simondac, better known as Patrick Starrr, is a pretty big name in the makeup industry. He is now a professional freelance makeup artist, but it wasn’t always like that. Like most men with a love for makeup he’s said how his family did struggle at first with him wanting to wear makeup. That being said he pursued his dreams, stuck to who he truly was and is now on everyones radar in the makeup industry.

A favourite video of mine that he’s done is in a trending series called, “The Power of Makeup.” Different Youtubers will make videos and then tag another to keep the chain going. This chain just happens to highlight the very power that makeup can hold. Patrick show of his amazing skills in his and mentions that you always have to be yourself, just like my campaign slogan.

Like he mentions in this video, he’s a boy that loves makeup, and why should that be a problem? Through all the research, the words of feedback from surveys, and the things I’ve seen online; be yourself was so relevant between it all. #BeYourself and share the power of the makeup you use!

In another video Patrick says that “makeup is a one size fits all.” That is such an honest and true statement, in the fact that each person can wear it so differently, and there is something for everyone out there. There are so many different things you can try, or use in makeup, no matter who you are. If makeup is an outlet that you use to boost your confidence than wear it. If you’re a man that wants to cover up that blemish for something, don’t feel ashamed. If you want to wear a full face of makeup, do it. There is no shame in wanting to be yourself.


CoverGirl’s first ever.. Cover Boy! 

Ground breaking news in beauty headlines right now is the newly announced CoverGirl. Who is actually the first ever Cover Boy, James Charles. This 17 year old makeup artist is extremely talented, and it’s about time the cover featured someone of the opposite sex.

While James looks fantastic with makeup he said that he, “can be confident with bare skin and with a full face.” He’s clearly not afraid to rock a full face of makeup any day of the week. It’s great to see more male makeup enthusiasts and makeup artists taking the internet by storm. James becoming the first male spokesmodel for Covergirl, is a huge step in creating an atmosphere that is welcoming for both genders in the makeup and beauty industry.

James isn’t the only male makeup lover to be all over the internet right now though. A popular name or face that you may have seen is Manny Gutierrez, who’s Instagram bio’s first line is, “I think boys deserve just as much cosmetic recognition.” Ultimately things are definitely moving in the right direction, and hopefully the acceptance of everyone’s choices will become more appreciated.

In the world of makeup, it’s all about creativity. You’re using tools that can give you a new freedom of speech. There’s no reason that the makeup guru’s that are idolized can’t be men, and the ones emerging right now are damn good at what they do!

The campaign I am working on right now unfortunately doesn’t have any males in the initial video. However, I would love to have the opportunity to work with them down the road. The true essence of this campaign would be to involve everyone, and that is what I’m ultimately looking for.


The use of makeup for awareness.

Make Love Not Scars is a non government organization, creating a place for acid attack victims to come together. It’s to help them through their recovery process and give them an outlet to band together and regain their own life.

One of their members who is helping to spread awareness on the issue is, Reshma Bano. In 2014, the young girl was attacked with acid and instead of staying quiet, decided to speak out against the topic on Youtube.

This brave, young woman, is speaking out with these simple videos using the outlet of the beauty industry in the media. This makeup can also help her to feel a different sense of herself, after going through such a traumatic experience she mentioned that she really hadn’t done anything. In a video with Blush, they referenced to her as, “The Brave Beauty.” After giving her a full makeover, she ended the video saying that, “Today I have lived and I feel really good. I want to be this way always, I feel great.” They gave her something to look forward to. The way they dolled her up empowered her to see herself, the way I’m sure many people see her already, just for her pure strength and positivity.

There are many issues going on in India today. It is far too easy to access and buy acid, which when thrown in a woman’s face, is taking away the livelihood of women there. Blush, the people involved in the video, through the use of clothes and makeup, were able to give her a sense of her life back. She then went on to make videos in a series called, Beauty Tips by Reshma, on the Make Love Not Scars youtube channel.

She uses a simple format of a makeup tutorial, to bring to light a much larger problem  facing India. After giving her beauty tip she then compares the simple beauty item to a situation involving the sale of acid in India. As example her important tip in the, How to get the perfect red lips video, she mentions how finding a red lipstick is as easy as picking up acid. Why is something so dangerous, as easy to acquire as a red lipstick?.

These videos got her recognized around the world and she was recently asked to be part of New York Fashion Week. Her strength and determination have now helped to increase the awareness on such an important problem.


#BeYourself like: Winnie Harlow

You may or may not know the name Winnie Harlow, but you will certainly recognize her if you see her. She is the global phenomenon who has graced major magazine covers and strutted down many a runway as a top model for designers from around the world.

Winnie Harlow was born in Jamaica, raised in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and is a proud Canadian woman, who is 22 years old. What you might not realize is that Winnie has a skin condition known as Vitiligo, which she has lived with since the age of four.

Her life might seem to you as surreal. Her friends include Drake, Kanye West, Nick Cannon (of AMT) and her current boyfriend is none other than the famous Formula 1 race car driver Lewis Hamilton. But her story is anything but a fairy tale, as she struggled with Vitiligo most of her life.

You see Vitiligo causes patchy depigmentation of the skin. These blotchy, inconsistent white patches on her skin were something that kids at school didn’t understand. She was abnormal in their eyes, and was even called Zebra, or Spotted Cow during her youth. Winnie struggled with thoughts of suicide in her teens, until she decided to embrace her condition and to be herself.

She is the classic poster woman for the type of campaign I’m creating, because she has steadfastly chosen to defy the odds and not hide her condition. Winnie chooses not to wear any makeup and has blossomed into one of the top models and designer spokespersons in the world.

She has defied all of the stereotypes of how women should dress and wear makeup to hide any blemishes that God forbid, might be perceived as un-natural. As she herself so eloquently put it, “A lot of people have a story or a background, but mine is painted on my body.”

Her inspirational rise to success serves as a reminder to those of us who are quick to judge a person by the color or condition of their skin. We are all human beings, with feelings, a sense of self worth.  If we strip that away by being cruel and mean, then we are missing the essence of being yourself.

The take away here is to simply #BeYourself, for Winnie that is now choosing to not cover up her condition and embrace her beauty. If she can do it, so can you.
